Instructional designers are trained experts who use a systematic
development
process and proven learning theory to create more efficient and effective
learning systems.
Making Instruction Effective
What makes instruction effective? No matter who the audience is, good instruction
is relevant to the learner and engages the learner. Instructional designers use
visual aids, animations, interactions, sound, simulations and even games to support
learning. How and when these elements are used depends on the learners' needs.

The Development Process
Instructional designers begin by analyzing the learning needs of the target audience
and then using this information to create learning outcomes (objectives) for the
training. These objectives are the targets or goals that the learners will achieve
when they finish the training, and they form the outline of the training design.
Based on their knowledge of the learners' existing skills and understanding, the
instructional designers then choose strategies and develop learning materials.
Everything is then field-tested. Evaluations from the learners and others allow
instructional designers to gauge the effectiveness of the program and revise it,
if necessary. This entire process is frequently referred to as instructional systems
development (ISD).
Blended Training Solutions
As learning moves closer to the job, instructional designers are blending different
delivery systems to address the need for more just-in-time and project-based learning,
performance support and distance learning. This allows learners to draw from a
greater variety of events and experiences.
